Strathalbyn Football Club Life Members

In the initial Constitution of the Strathalbyn Football Club, under Rule 12, “The Committee shall have power to elect honorary life members. Such membership to be awarded to those who have rendered ten years service in office, and to players who have played 100 games and given ten years service, three matches to be deemed a years service”, provided opportunity for the awarding of Life Membership of the SFC.

No limitation on the number that could be awarded in any year applied.

In those times, the SFC usually only played in between ten and fifteen matches per season, even in seasons in which they participated in finals.

With further development of the SFC within the GSFL, the club now regularly participated in between sixteen and twenty games per season.

At the AGM, in preparation for the 1978 season, these qualifications were amended to read 15 years service as an official or 200 games as a player and a limitation of two life memberships per year.

In 1982 the Constitution was again amended to read “A limitation of three life memberships per year”.

At the AGM held on the 4^th of March 1947 the following is minuted.

“Life Membership to players and officials was discussed and it is probable that in the near future that a number of the older hands will have this honour conferred upon them”.

Accordingly, at the “Annual Smoke Social” held on Saturday the 20^th of September 1947, Life Membership Certificates were presented to ten former players and officials.

As club records are sketchy through the period of the 1930’s and with the cancellation of football from late 1940 until the end of 1945 at the conclusion of World War 2, it is assumed that this action righted a number of Life Memberships that were, in some cases, long overdue.

Interestingly, the sketchy records resulted in Life Memberships being re awarded on several occasions.

Lance (Toey) Watson was rightly awarded his Life Membership in 1938 and, to his great surprise, received another Life Membership award in 1955.

Similarly Norm Kerslake, Head Trainer for many years was awarded Life Membership in 1957 and, it appears, again in 1962.

Our current constitution states:

(b) The Board may appoint any natural person who has
(i) rendered satisfactory service of a minimum of fifteen years to the Club.
(ii) or played a minimum of two hundred (200) Senior (A or Reserves Grade) games of football over a minimum of twelve years.
(iii) or a combination thereof (i) and (ii) such as to tally fifteen (15) years’ service as a player and rendered service
to Life Membership of the SFC
(c) The Directors may, each year, at their discretion (In addition to any Life Membership elected pursuant to (b) )elect as Life Members such persons, not exceeding one in number, as they may consider to be entitled to Life Membership by reason of special services rendered to the Club.
(d) A maximum of three (3) life members may be appointed for any one (1) year.
