The Hills Football Association was formed in 1902, however Strathalbyn did not affiliate until the commencement of the 1903 season.
Following several incidents and disputes, although winning the majority of their matches, Strathalbyn withdrew from the Association and reverted to Challenge matches for the following 2 seasons, however interest declined significantly and it was obvious that for football to flourish in Strathalbyn, it was necessary to return to the Association, which occurred in readiness for season 1906.
Strathalbyn remained affiliated with the Hills Football Association until it was disbanded, due to the great depression, in 1930 and Strathalbyn joined the Great Southern Football League for that year, and then with the Hills Central Football Association from 1931.
The onset of World War 1 saw football virtually abandoned from 1915 to 1918, however several photographs exist of the Strathalbyn Football Club teams through that period.
Competitive football in the Hills Football Association recommenced in season 1919.
