The Strath U14 and U17 Girls travelled to Myponga Friday night.

Our U14 girls kicked off the season with a hard fought 9 point win against a very persistent Myponga side.

Despite starting the game slowly, the girls clicked into gear after quarter time, following the lead of newly appointed captain Lacey Willsmore, whose work rate was incredible. Best for Strath were Lacey Willsmore, Poppy Groom, Natasha Vogelsang, Macie Parker, Jypsi Murphy and Chloe Bailey. Goals were kicked by Lacey, Lily Walker, Macey Parker and Evie Bielby-Spooner.

Highlight of the match was a string of 6 marks in succession across the outer wing in the third term which resulted in a vital goal being kicked into the wind. A great platform for the Roosters to build on as they will only continue to improve and gain confidence as the season progresses.

The U17 Girls played Victor Harbor. Both teams had good numbers and skills on show. Strath were strong and controlled the game from the start with some excellent ball movement along the wings, strong tackling and link-up play through the middle. Strath’s Lily Jenke kicked the only goal for the 1st quarter. The game continued at a fast pace in the second quarter with Victor kicking their first, the game tied at half time. The 3rd quarter was tight with only a couple points scored, Strath leading by a single point. Early in the last quarter Strath’s Ava Laan kicked a goal from long range. The team held on to take the win 2.3 to 1.2, in what was a consistently played game. The girls celebrated their first win for the season with a raucous rendition of the Club song. Best were Ava Laan, Marley Tape, Sienna Ballantyne, Marny McInnes, Lily Jenke and Michaela Reed.

Both teams play their next games at home, on Sunday morning, the 14th of April.

Our Mini Colts played in their Semi Final against Willunga on Saturday and had a home ground advantage. The first quarter was tight with the Mini Colts up by only 1 point leading into the second quarter. Our Mini Roosters continued to battle and found their momentum. The boys were able to push out their lead and won the game. The lads were pretty excited to be going through to play in a Grad Final next week and sung the club song loud and proud!

Get around our Mini Colts next week and support them at their Grand Final! Let’s hope they can bring home the goods!

Our A grade men travelled to Willunga Oval to play against McLaren in an Elimination Final. Unfortunately our Roosters were unable to crack the strong McLaren side. Our Roosters put in a great effort and have had a solid season. We look forward to seeing what the 2022 season brings for these guys.

Seventeen Strath U14 girls combined with Encounter Bay and played a combined McLaren/Mt Compass side at Encounter Bay today. The training through the year is certainly paying off with some great attacking football and general passages of play.

Charlotte Collins kicked three goals and Lucy Weckert one in her second ever game! Zinta Boag in defense and Kaydee Pascoe in Ruck and up forward both played great games today and along with Charlotte Collins were Strath’s best.

The Strath/Bays side were comfortable winners over their opposition in a game with great play from both sides.

Our Moddies absolutely carved it up today! Our U9’s in particular, what a performance! Our Moddies are playing some really good footy at the moment. We can clearly see the skills have developed and the desire to do well, and win the ball with lots of team efforts shows our Moddies are quickly learning the Rooster brand of football. Halfway through the season now and we think these kids have found their mojo!

The Mini Colts had another excellent game. Now that we are in the second half of the season our Minis are focused on refining their skills and structures ready for the Mini Colts Carnival. Our Mini’s Coaching team seem to have a clear, well defined and well communicated goal-focused approach and their results continually prove they are heading in the right direction. Some standout efforts this week were made by Field, Harding, MacDonald, and Stutley.

The Junior Colts had a fantastic game and played consistently throughout all four quarters. A fantastic win for this team and it was a great confidence booster for this very young side. Duffield and Matthew’s-Hampton found some sweet spots in the forward lines and kicked 3 goals each. Our Junior Colts coaching team provided each individual player with their personalised, mid-season feedback report today. So we will now see our Juniors capitalising on their current strengths and developing further in specific areas. We look forward to watching this progress

Our Senior Colts had a tough game against Encounter Bay. With a few of our older players out with injuries, it was a great opportunity for some of our younger ones to step up. Some great efforts were seen by these younger lads today. Brock Beeching was given a set task this week and his endeavour to try to achieve this was positively noted. Our Senior Colt Roosters also showed some brilliant mentoring today with a couple of little Moddies seen idolising this group. They immediately included these little ones in the pre-game huddle as soon as they saw them in the change rooms

The Rooster Reserves had a great first half but the game just got away from them in the last half. Abbott, Kenyon and Rogers led the pack today, claiming the top three BOGs. Our Reserves keep on chipping away and improving each week. The team collegiality is down right obvious. We are all on board the B Grade Brotherhood Train and are loving watching this positive team culture grow

Our A grade side showed Encounter Bay how drizzly, slippery, wet weather footy is played. Our Roosters came out of the gates raring to go and didn’t look back. Roosters who were excellent to watch today (IMHO) were our Captain, Micca Elliot and Brodie Martin. Martin’s ability to protect the drop zone and take a secure and reliable grab is second to none. Elliot’s ability to read the play, get in the right spot and push from a stoppage is something our little Roosters should be studying. This was a convincing win given last time this was a close match between the two sides. Maybe our A grade men are ready to show a few top sides a thing or two this time around? Watch this space…..

We got off to a great start against Mt Compass on our home turf, with our Minis, Junior Colts and Senior Colts all getting the wins and singing the Rooster song loud and proud in the change rooms.

Both our A grade and B grade teams put in massive efforts in their games. Both games were arm wrestles throughout and unfortunately we didn’t get over the line in the end. The rivalry was fierce and how we played against Mt Compass was impressive to watch.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who helped make the day successful. It was great to see a few more players helping out this week and serving some of our little Colts who loved the interaction with their Rooster idols

Our week started off with our U9 Moddies playing a scratchy on Friday night under lights. The kids enjoyed playing at night and it was great to see so many families at the club.

The rest of our teams headed to Tiger town today for what turned out to be a great day of footy for most of our sides!

Our Minis were once again impressive and these kids just keep on getting better every week. Such a strong team that is full of superstars and we can’t wait to see what this group will be like by the time the end of season Mini Colts Carnival arrives

Our Junior Colts blitzed their game today! Max Fergs kicked 7 goals today and slotted himself in the top spot for BOG this week. But there were many more contributors to the game, with all players getting plenty of the ball.

The Senior Colts recognised Tom Scott and Tommy Welk’s 100th games as Roosters but unfortunately the team were not able to get the win today for the boys. The back lines certainly had their work cut out for them and worked hard for all four quarters. Unfortunately we couldn’t make a come back this time around

Our Rooster Reserve’s confidence has certainly lifted this week and it was noticeable straight out of the gates. With so many contributors across the game it was tough for our coaches to select best players. Simmo Jnr launching a goal from outside the 50 metre mark and slotting it straight through the big sticks with ease was awesome to watch. #kidcankick. Speaking of big sticks, Josh Gilbert had a great game today. Duffield Snr showed he still has what it takes and a few passages of play between Duff Snr and Duff Jnr were awesome to watch

Our A Grade came out and took control of the game from the get go! The Captain, Micca Elliot worked hard all game feeding the forwards the ball and also kicked a couple of goals himself while he was at it. We had 9 individual goal scorers across the team but the game became the “Bro Show” with Brodie Martin kicking 10 goals.

This week Strathalbyn hosted Round 7. There had been some welcome rain on Saturday so the oval was a little soggy early but looked in great condition. Sixteen Strath girls combined with 9 from Yankalilla playing against McLaren and Mt Compass combined. It made for some congested footy at times but when the ball did come out of the rolling maul there was space for girls to run and use their pace. We had 7 girls playing up with the U17’s so they all played 2 or 3 quarters and then went and warmed up with the older girls. This meant the other girls took more key positions where they all excelled. We even played the last quarter with one less player but it wasn’t noticeable. Its a credit to the depth and talent of the Strath girls that they can step up when required. This was also very evident in the U17 game where none of the U14’s looked out of place. With one goal to Millie and a couple to one of the Yank girls, the combined Reds won the game with continued pressure in the forward lines bringing opportunities for goals. Final score was “roughly” 3:5 to 2:0. I’ve been encouraging the girls to play on whenever they can (except right in front of goal!) and it was great to see more of this happening. One who excelled at this on Sunday was Caitlyn who played her best game of footy yet; a deserving winner of our Best Player this week (donated by Country Canines Mobile Dog Wash). Lastly, a big thankyou to the Mums who gave up part of their Mothers Day to come and cheer on their Daughters. Thanks especially to Natasha for Team Managing as she does every week!

All 17 Strath U14 girls travelled to McLaren this week, combining with 14 girls from Victor, playing against a combined McLaren and Mt Compass. This meant 22 a side on the ground with a heap of girls on the bench. Most girls got 3 full quarters, with 9 changes each break!
It was a congested game around the packs but when the ball came out there was some excellent running and ball movement by the Strath/Victor “Rooster-Roos”. The ball spent a lot of time in our forward 50 and it was great to see a number of players in particular staying a kick out. Sienna (pictured above) was one who ran and kicked the ball back into our 50 numerous times.
There was some really creative play during the game, with some excellent marking, tackling, running to space and shepherds for team-mates. There were some great runs of play down the wings with multiple bounces by Marley and Lily. It’s also fantastic to see numerous second and third efforts from the girls.
Zoe kicked 2 goals playing up forward, with one from Lily (after kicking 5 points!), one to a Victor girl and a goal to Charlotte Diepgrond with one of her longest kicks ever!
Four of our girls played with the U17’s this week with more to play up a grade in coming weeks.
This week the pizza voucher donated by Cafe Ruffino goes to Zoe for her two goals and the award donated by Country Canines Mobile Dog Wash goes to Charlotte for her excellent goal!
This Sunday we play at home at 11:30 so why not come down before Mother’s Day lunch to have a look at some of the exciting Junior female talent playing for the club!

With ANZAC day on Sunday this year, the girls matches this week are a bit all over the place. The U17 girls played at home under lights against Yankalilla, with both teams lining up pre-game for the Last Post and the National Anthem to honor the ANZAC’s.
The Strath girls played a great style of team footy right from the first bounce. Solid attacking footy, lots of run and voice amongst the team carried through to 3 goals being scored to Yanks none in the first quarter. Amber Grove was dominating in the ruck and gave her centre players the first opportunity at many contests.
Lilli Mitchell gave the side plenty of run and drive and created many opportunities for the forwards to capitalise, while Ruby McBeath was collecting possessions in all corners of the ground. Willow Rose was the focal point up forward and made the most of the hard work from her team-mates through the middle. Charlotte Walsh was solid in defence, working hard all game.
Strath kicked another 5 goals for the match in a consistent display of team footy, running out winners 8.3 to Yanks 3.1.
There were nine U14 players who stepped up and none of them looked out of place playing with the older age group.
The girls now have a small weekly Best Player award donated by Country Canines Mobile Dog Wash and Grooming and the deserving winner this week was Ruby, backing up her great work in the centre by making good position in the forward-lines to also kick 4 goals.

Round 2 took our Roosters down to the Willunga Demon’s turf. We have always had a great sporting rivalry with Willunga and Saturday was no different.

The Moddies sides saw some super cute, new recruits take to the field. These kids were so pumped to be playing their first games

Our Mini Colts have once again got impressive player numbers this season. This week marked our second week of loaning some of our Mini Colts to Echunga Football Club’s (HFL) Minis team. We have had some Mini Colts volunteer to play a game in the Echunga side to assist their club and get themselves some extra game experience on their own “rest” weeks. Thank you to those players who have put their hand up to do this

Our Junior Colts had a tough game against a very good Willunga team. In the first half Willunga were able to win a lot of the footy and our boys were chasing them a lot. An improved second half from our boys was much better. We had far more scoring opportunities and showed we can match it to the better teams. We are a young team and this was a good learning experience to see a good running team. The margin was a 12 goal loss but I’m sure we can improve that margin the next time around. Although it was a difficult game Riley Schubert, Max Fergusson and Elliot Duffield showed some real skill across the ground. James Scott played well, and both Max and James then played in the Senior Colts game, contributing well to that game also.

Our Senior Colts showed great confidence and synergy on the field this week. It was a very close match up throughout the entire game. Amazing leadership and team work was evident and every player certainly played their part. It was tough to limit the best players to 6 Roosters. Logan Barbary played his first game back for the season and was on point immediately. Jacob McMullen secured the top BOG of the game. After a late withdrawal from the B grade, Jacob then played his first official B grade game afterwards. Well done Senior Colts on a magnificent effort this week that was really great to watch. Our Senior Colts and Mini Colts were certainly the stars of the show this week

Our B grade men had a tough challenge on their hands against a strong Willunga team. It’s these types of tough matches where individual player’s resilience levels and abilities to dig deep can be clearly seen. Even when the going was getting really tough, players like Reuben Stutley, Brett Abbott and Ben Schultz refused to give up.

Our A grade men managed to get within two goals of Willunga at half time by kicking numerous consecutive goals late in the second quarter. Unfortunately they were unable to maintain the momentum and Willunga took the win. Having Cooper Machin and Daniel Peglar back in the side worked well with both players kicking a couple of handy goals each. Tom Redden, Ryan Clarke and our Rooster Captain, Marc Elliott left nothing in the tank and were placed in the top three best players.
